Monte Bernardi Retromarcia Chianti Classico 2014

Monte Bernardi Retromarcia Chianti Classico 2014

  • Intensely typical and expressive wine from Tuscany's historic zone - Chianti Classico.
  • Sangiovese has a natural charm and elegance other varieties envy. That is captured perfectly by the organic viticulture at Monte Bernardi.
  • From the Southern part of Chinati's Panzano region - the Grand Cru of Chianti Classico!

The Monte Bernardi Estate is under the stewardship of brother and sister Michael and Jennifer Schmelzer. They arrived in Italy in 2000 fell in love with Chianti, acquired this now world-renowned winery and in 2003 the Retromarcia label marks a return to traditional winemaking practices. Making Chianti that is wonderfully bright, juicy, and superbly well balanced by classic sour cherry notes and a savouriness that cries out for traditional Tuscan fare, from Florentine steak to parpadelle pasta.

The estate name, Monte Bernardi, dates back to 1085. The majority of the vineyards are over 40 years old. In 1992 the estate started to produce its own wine from the grapes it grew rather than selling the fruit to neighbouring farms. The vineyards are perfectly situated - standing at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, surrounded by forests and enjoying a southern exposure, with the river Pesa flowing just a few hundred meters to the south.

"Our estate wines are made only from grapes sourced from the vineyards we farm, picked at optimum ripeness and sorted by hand. We farm our vines biodynamically. This allows for the greatest expression of terroir, ultimate quality, and harmony between our vineyards and the environment." - Michael Schmelzer, Winemaker.

If you relish a challenge and love to show off, then research how to pronounce the name of this blinder correctly. Buy a bottle and introduce it (and your newfound esoteric knowledge) at a dinner party. It's Italian and quite brilliant.
