The Wine

Country of origin:

Australia

Region:

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale has many sub-regions that yield tiny parcels of old vine fruit. Thanks to guys like Steve, these secret stashes are finally getting a route to market. Grown in a sandy, exposed site at Blewitt Springs, the gnarly, old bush vines respond especially well to long, drawn-out summers like '13. This is a near flawless interpretation of how good medium-bodied wines from this area can be. A wine with intense aromas of flowers and spice and plenty of soft red fruit to wonder over too.

The Winemaker

"This is a near flawless interpretation of how good medium bodied wines from the Blewitt Springs area can be. All sorts of warmed spices and floral notes explode out of the glass and the tannins bolt to the sides of your mouth where the acid turns up the dial and tells your brain ‘hold on here, we’re on’. I could, have and will continue to drink this all day." - Steve Grimley

Customer ratings

Not bad at all, will give this another go

A little pricey for the quality but still good

Very nice. Never had Mataro before but enjoyed it.

Bought a bottle in Chicago at the recommendation of a wine merchant. I thought it had a nice fresh acidic young taste. Perhaps a couple of more years will make this even better. Always fun trying lesser known varieties, this was my first mataro
