The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Valle Central
In the 1960s Semillon was widely planted across Chile, but fashions shifted and many vineyards were replaced by Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, leaving only a small area today. So, when this example stood out at a Chilean tasting, we secured the entire parcel. From rare, low yielding old vines in Apalta in the Colchagua Valley, it offers fresh aromatics, gentle mid-palate weight and lingering lemon barley fruit, combining heritage with vibrant, modern charm.

Founded in 1880 in the Maipo Valley, Viña Santa Rita is one of Chile's most historic wineries, renowned for its pioneering role in elevating the country's wine reputation on the global stage. The estate blends tradition with innovation, producing exceptional wines that honour its rich heritage. At the helm of Santa Rita's winemaking is Óscar Salas Steinlen, an esteemed winemaker with over two decades of experience. Passionate about sustainability and showcasing the diversity of Chile's terroirs, Óscar combines meticulous craftsmanship with modern techniques to create wines that embody the essence of their origin.
"These Semillon grapes come from Apalta, within the Colchagua Valley. The vines are located in the transition in-between the lower clay soils and the granitic higher areas of the foothills of the Apalta hills. They are not irrigated, and the yields are very low. Apalta is an area with a lot of sun exposure but with good ventilation due to the coastal influence and it delivers wines with very good structure. That is to say, they are more powerful and intense than usual." - Oscar Salas Steinlen, Winemaker.
