This wine was a bit of a surprise whilst barrel tasting at the Wilderberg Winery in Franschhoek, being made from 100% Mourvèdre. A variety that is almost exclusively used as a blending component because it is powerful and when unblended can be a little overwhelming. That isn't the case here, the wine is clean and pure, with dark cherry and raspberry, wonderfully full-bodied, exceptionally juicy, and perfectly balanced.

You really need to focus on the small stuff in the vineyards through to the bottle because if you slip up on any part, the wine won't be any good. For me, wine is made in the vineyards and I'm just there to guide it into the bottle with limited intervention, keeping it pure and not fake.
"Mourvèdre rarely gets the chance to shine on its own, but this vintage really has given it the perfect platform. A concentrated red, layered with black fruits and peppery spice balanced by lovely earthiness." - JD Rossouw, Winemaker.
