The Wine

Country of origin:

Chile

Region:

Valle Central

Chardonnay thrives when treated with a light touch and this unoaked expression is all about freshness over richness. Harvested from vineyards that have a coastal influence and then fermented cool to preserve purity, Astro Costera Chardonnay is clean, linear, and finely textured, with notes of lemon zest, juicy peach and gentle tropical fruit. A far cry from the overblown style, this is vibrant, elegant and a brilliant match for grilled seabass or roast chicken with lemon and herbs.

The Winemaker

Óscar Salas Steinlen
Winemaker:

Óscar Salas
Steinlen

Founded in 1880 in the Maipo Valley, Viña Santa Rita is one of Chile's most historic wineries, renowned for its pioneering role in elevating the country's wine reputation on the global stage. The estate blends tradition with innovation, producing exceptional wines that honour its rich heritage. At the helm of Santa Rita's winemaking is Óscar Salas Steinlen, an esteemed winemaker with over two decades of experience. Passionate about sustainability and showcasing the diversity of Chile's terroirs, Óscar combines meticulous craftsmanship with modern techniques to create wines that embody the essence of their origin.

"We use hand-harvested Chardonnay, primarily sourced from the vineyards of Colchagua Costa, typically situated around 300 metres above sea level. The relatively low elevation of the surrounding coastal hills allows cool Pacific breezes to meet with Andean air currents, moderating the climate and extending the ripening period. This natural cooling helps preserve the grapes' vibrant acidity. A combination of alluvial, clay, and loam soils lends distinctive texture and layered character to the wine. Gentle handling - from harvest through to pressing - ensures the purity of the fruit is preserved. Fermented slowly at low temperatures, this Chardonnay retains a fresh, vibrant profile and the crisp elegance that speaks clearly of its origin." - Óscar Salas Steinlen, Winemaker.

Christine

First chardonnay I have had in many years. Nice clean taste with background familiar finish.

Peter

Not a great wine. Too much astringency and had far better Australian equivalents

Grant

Very little taste a complete waste of money
