  • This wine hails from an exceptional 70-hectare estate in the Monferrato hills, North-West Italy, purchased and redeveloped in 1999.
  • Refurbishment of the cellars began the year after purchase and was finished just in time to take on their first 2007 vintage - and this latest vintage is just as incredible!
  • You'll want classic homemade Italian food to accompany this cracking red - a spaghetti bolognese or a traditional veggie lasagne should see you right.

The Wine

Country of origin:

Italy

Region:

Piedmont

The Barbera fruit in Rive is sourced from the Rive (Piedmontese for 'very steep') and the Baldizzone vineyards which are at an altitude of 450 metres. The vibrant aromas of black cherries and prunes dominate here with subtle chocolate notes and toasty oak, providing complexity. The palate is rich, textured and finishes with a delicious balancing acidity.

The Winemaker

Carlo Manera
Winemaker:

Carlo Manera

Carlo Manera is a 3rd generation winemaker. His grandfather Livio was a joint founder of 'Antica Contea di Castelvero' in 1954 - and his parents Claudio and Lella are also qualified winemakers who work at Araldica. So it was perhaps inevitable that he followed his family into the wine business! He studied at the School of Oenology 'Umberto 1' institute in Alba (a wine school since 1881), graduating summa cum laude from the University of Turin in 2011 - and was employed full-time at Araldica in 2013. He has always been interested in winemaking techniques from around the world, which has led him to visit wineries in New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Greece and every part of Italy - plus working vintages in South Africa and Alsace. Carlo is respectful of regional traditions and wine styles, however he is not afraid to innovate.

"This is a Barbera of great structure, it is dry and fresh and well balanced with the intense flavour of black cherry and plum that is well integrated with a touch of sweet spice and almond. Intense and persistent finish." - Carlo Manera, Winemaker.

Matthew

Red fruit, but a but tannic and sawdusty for a Barbera at this price point. Not terribly complex and kind of died mid-palate.

Daniel

Blackberries fruits with a nice woody spice after taste, lovely body like most Italians.
