The Wine The Wine
Spain
Region:Galicia
This wine comes from a single vineyard situated around 500m above sea level, on soils of slate, granite and alluvial soil from the River Támega which runs through the heart of DO Monterrei, in Galicia. The climate is a unique mix of continental and Atlantic influences which creates the perfect environment for the production of high quality Godello grapes. These grapes are then slowly fermented and aged, with 20% of the juice in old large French oak barrels. Once blended back together, this wine is rich, mature, round and spicy. Ripe apple fruit and notes of honey and almonds are tempered from 15 months resting on fine lees which helps to maintain freshness, acidity and impart a long toasty finish.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Norrel Robertson
Having been brought up in Scotland, where he did his apprenticeship at Oddbins in Edinburgh, Norrel embarked on a journey to become a winemaker - encompassing the passing of the Master of Wine exams and then the well-respected winemaking course at New Zealand's Lincoln University. After spells in France, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Chile, Norrel and his family settled in Spain where he owns over 32 hectares of mainly old vine Garnacha, around the village of Villarroya de la Sierra, in Aragon. His company - El Escocés Volante (The Flying Scotsman) - currently produces many award-winning wines, whilst he also still consults in Chile and South Africa."
"The great white hope from Spain. If you are looking for a great alternative to aged white Burgundy then this is it. Luscious and creamy with great salinity and a long finish." - Norrel Robertson, Winemaker.
