The Wine The Wine

Region:Washington State
Charles Smith is a former rock band manager who has become a wine industry mogul. After touring around Europe he developed a love of good wine and decided to turn his hand to winemaking, producing his first wine in 2001. Charles' knowledge of and respect for old world winemaking techniques coupled with his commitment to how people actually drink wine are what make his wines so special. When Hollywood's surprise hit Sideways suddenly spawned anti-Merlot sentiments everywhere, Charles set out to rebuff the movie's unflattering depiction of this noble grape variety.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Megan Schofield
Having grown up in Ontario, Megan Schofield was surrounded by grapes, but never imagined herself as a winemaker. However at University she was soon intrigued by the excitement around a new program being offered in oenology and viticulture and in 2000 she received her Honours Bachelor of Science degree. From there her path as a winemaker launched and she moved from country-to-country to experience as many grape harvests as possible. Megan has held the winemaker role at Beringer Vineyards, Buena Vista Winery, Robert Mondavi Winery, and today she is Head Winemaker at Charles Smith Wines.
"As advertised, this smooth Merlot offers pure velvet, deep and delicious black fruit, cedar, tobacco and cassis. It conveys concentrated richness and yet purity and focus. It's so good that it appears the devil made me do it." - Megan Schofield, Winemaker.
