The Wine The Wine
Spain
Region:Penedès
In converting their vineyards from the typical Penedes high yields, Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio have abandoned all forms of chemical treatment and fertilisers, instead following basic organic practices. Cargol Treu Vi champions the indigenous varietal Xarel-lo, and is made from very old vines which yield grapes of tremendous concentration. In this wine you'll find lovely aromas of white flowers, white fruit, citrus, hints of smoke and elegant mineral undertones. On the palate, notes of apples, pears, smoke, dry flowers and vanilla combine with some salty touches and mineral remembrances which linger long into the finish.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio
Winemakers Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio say, "Having studied in Burgundy, we decided that what we wanted in a winery was something small over which we could have absolute control, which we could craft into something really special. And that is exactly what we have done!" Penedès is a premium region in North Eastern Spain, which has long had a reputation, (besides Rioja) for being Spain's most highly regarded production area. Certainly, it is one of the oldest viticultural areas in Europe.
"The Xarel-lo bush vines which make this wine are over 70 years old. Planted on chalky soils, production is low with yields less than 2000 kg / Ha. We take an organic and biodynamic approach to the vineyards. Vinification is carried out in 300 litre French oak barrels, 25% of which is in new oak, and it is fermented with wild yeast." - Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio, Winemakers.
