The Wine

Country of origin:

Spain

Region:

Navarra

This is a wine style for all seasons. The rich, luscious dried fruit and warming spices makes for an excellent red on those cold, dark winter evenings. Yet the smoky aromatics from extended oak ageing are crying out for a barbecue on a hot summer's afternoon. It's a complex beast but evidently versatile too, and at this price it's well worth stocking up to get you through all four seasons.

Navarra is a wonderful part of Spain in the foothills of the Pyrenees that has a long history of making great wines. The vineyards of this highly regarded producer lie on the gentle limestone-based soil slopes within the tiny sub-region of Valdizarbe. The total production accounts for a very small part of Navarra's total output, but good things come in small packages, so they say! "We understand wine as the culmination of a process that begins with the grape. We take painstaking efforts to bring out the most distinguishing characteristics of each vineyard. We select the best grapes, harvest them at the right moment and handle the bunches with the greatest care. During the process of creation, with the pressing of the grapes and temperature control, we maximize the aromas. For the ageing process we choose only the best wood appropriate for the wine." Milagros Rodriguez, Winemaker.

"The Reserva style is probably my favourite. It has completely softened and become more complex because of the time in barrel, but it has retained just enough of the primary fruit character to keep it fresh and drinkable without food." - Milagros Rodriguez, Winemaker.

Smooth and rich. Makes a great first impression.

Not a bad wine but I wouldn't reorder.
