vineyard shot in Ribera

Those who've tried it, know

Located in Castilla y León, north of Madrid, Ribera del Duero produces some of Spain’s finest wines! Although there are a few big players in the region, most are small, family-owned wineries who are passionate about producing the greatest wines possible.

Tempranillo is the main variety, known locally as Tinta del País or Tinto Fino and the style of red wines ranges from young and fruity, with little or no oak, through Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reservas that each meet a minimum aging, both in barrel and bottle.

It’s certainly not an easy region to make wine as the climate is extremely challenging, but with an array of complex soils, old vines, high altitudes and a lot of dedication, the results are more than worth the effort!

The unique climatic conditions that characterise the cultivation of vines in Ribera del Duero greatly influence the growing cycle of the vines, playing a fundamental role both in the development of the plant and the ripening of the grapes. The region boasts dry summers, long and harsh winters, low rainfall (400-500 mm/year average) and a large difference in temperatures throughout the year (from -20º to 42º C). This results in grapes of an extraordinary quality - small in size, with thick skins, that have benefited from an optimal slow and late ripening period.

Located in Castilla y León, halfway between Bilbao and Madrid in Northwest Spain, the vineyards of Ribera del Duero stretch intermittently for over 70 miles along the River Duero. When it was awarded the Designation of Origin in 1982, there were only eight wineries and cooperatives with little more than 6,000 hectares of vineyards, the region now covers more than 27,000 hectares and is made up of 317 wineries that are spread across the provinces of Soria, Segovia, Valladolid and Burgos.
