The Loire region is the longest and most diverse vineyard area in France. It stretches horizontally across the country, giving it a unique profile with a mosaic of soils and climates. The river Loire is an inextricable part of the vineyard landscape and is a direct source of inspiration as well as influence on the immensely rich array of wines produced here.

From the fresh white wines of Muscadet and Touraine through rich, complex Chenin Blancs of Saumur and Vouvray; delicious sparkling Crémant wines, many styles of rosé and world famous, unctuous sweet wines, the Loire is a wine-lover's paradise. Red wines too come in all shades and structure: lighter styles that can be enjoyed slightly chilled, through to the more tannic wines of Chinon. Purity of fruit, freshness and elegance are the hallmark of wine from the Loire.

The Loire's microclimates change according to altitude and slope orientation. The prevailing westerly wind - and sometimes the north-easterly breeze - can have a greater or lesser impact on vineyard microclimate and so the grape varieties grown and styles produced.

Overall, the Loire enjoys a temperate climate, but each of its sub-regions is subject to a different set of influences:
- The Nantais and Anjou enjoy an oceanic climate.
- From the Saumur region to Touraine, the climate becomes progressively more continental in character as the hills provide a barrier to the ocean's influence.
- From Touraine, the climate is continental.
