Kolsch is a very specific style of lager that's exclusive to the city of Cologne, with a union of brewers - the 'Kolsch Konvention' - protecting and ensuring its quality by enforcing very specific brewing methods. The beer tends to be a bit gentler than a typical German pilsner but with more complexity too. Fruh are considered to be one of the city's best brewers of Kolsch and one of these half-litre bottles pulled from the bottom of the fridge will show you why.

Jever can boast a practically unchanged recipe in nearly 200 years. The secret is the water source. Soft water is what makes the crispest pilsner and the water doesn't come any softer than from their own well up in the extreme northwest of Germany on the North Sea coast. This creates the perfect support for lots of hops and the result is a tart, bitter, light and crisp pils fit for an aperitif on any occasion.

Now into the fifth generation of the Veltins family at the helm of this highly-regarded brewery in Germany's west. Despite its relatively large size now (fourth biggest selling beer in Germany) the success of Veltins is underpinned by its humble beginnings, a very small brewhouse with an exception water source and an outright commitment to brewing beer in line with the German Purity Law of 1516. Safe to say it's an approach that's stood the test of time!

The story of Augustiner dates back to... wait for it... 1328! This was the year that records show the first beer was brewed by Augustinian monks in their monastery just outside Munich. As you might imagine there's a history rich with beer-related anecdotes between then and now such was the local reputation of this beer, but there isn't enough space here to go into that here! The brewery is now privately owned but in terms of its output it is simply a continuation of the previous 700 years.
