Adi Badenhorst, a legend in our view, pays hommage to one of his favourite Old World numbers: Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Grenache, Mourvedre blend is a classic Châteauneuf one, and delivers the same kind of throaty, richly endowed glory. A man on a mission, a wine on song.
Adi grew up between vineyards and spent his time picking (stealing) grapes and making his first wine when he was thirteen. After completing his studies at Elsenburg, Adi worked in the north Rhone, France, New Zealand and nine years as winemaker at the esteemed Stellenbosch estate, Rustenberg. In 2008 he packed it all in and bought a 60-hectare piece of land in the Paardeberg with his cousin Hein. They now proudly farm together, practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner.
Type: Shiraz / Syrah
A unique parcel, made and blended by Nico Vermuelen, consisting of the fruit of three blocks in Sir Lowry's Pass, Simonsdien and Franschoek. Nico gets us "back to basics" with a well made, fruit-driven, jammy Shiraz.
Type: Grenache / Garnacha blend
Capcanes is a small village in the mountainous countryside south of Barcelona. For centuries growers cultivated grapes on the steep terraces and slopes. The wine style has developed over time, now combining native varietals from very old vines with newly introduced Syrah. The style is a magnificent combo of the venerable and youthful.
Type: Mourvedre / Monastrell
Pacheco Monastrell from Jumilla, in South-eastern Spain inland from Alicante, has a fruitiness and coolness to it and Monastrell is the region's star grape.
