The Magnificent Crowing Cockerel Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2009

The Magnificent Crowing Cockerel Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2009

  • Adi's flair and mild madness pull together to deliver some of the most exciting (and super-tasty) wines is all of South Africa.
  • Old bush vines make ridiculously good blends that ape some of the character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
  • In addition to the main two grape varieties listed on the label there are a further six (in small type on the label) making up this fascinating wine.

Adi Badenhorst, a legend in our view, pays hommage to one of his favourite Old World numbers: Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Grenache, Mourvedre blend is a classic Châteauneuf one, and delivers the same kind of throaty, richly endowed glory. A man on a mission, a wine on song.

Matthew Jukes talks about The Magnificent Crowing Cockerel.

"This fabulous wine made by the very talented Adi Badenhorst certainly wakes up your sense! With warm, spicy, fruit cake and gingerbread notes this is a medium-weight fellow designed for stews and pies."

Adi Badenhorst

Winemaker: Adi Badenhorst

Country: South Africa

Adi grew up between vineyards and spent his time picking (stealing) grapes and making his first wine when he was thirteen. After completing his studies at Elsenburg, Adi worked in the north Rhone, France, New Zealand and nine years as winemaker at the esteemed Stellenbosch estate, Rustenberg. In 2008 he packed it all in and bought a 60-hectare piece of land in the Paardeberg with his cousin Hein. They now proudly farm together, practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner.
