The Wine The Wine
Germany
Region:Rheingau
In the 1990s this family run estate forged its way onto the world stage with its impressive Rieslings, and ever since then has become synonymous with quality. The Rheinschiefer Hallgartgen Riesling is made from grapes grown at altitude on slate rich soils around the village of Hallgarten. It is a beautifully crafted dry Riesling, laden with citrus, spice, herbaceous notes and wet slate, with a distinctive salty minerality on the finish. It's a superb wine that would be excellent with seafood, Asian cuisine, or even roast pork.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Peter Bernhard Kühn
Peter Bernhard Kühn is the son of Peter-Jakob Kühn, and the latest generation to take on winemaking at their Rheingau estate. It has been in their family for over 230 years, and today they have 18 hectares of gently sloping clay-limestone and slate vineyards in Oestrich, Hallgarten, and Mittelheim. Peter is a keen advocate of natural agriculture, and is one of the most rigorous practitioners of biodynamic viticulture in Germany.
"Due to the cooler climate in our vineyards which are on slopes surrounding Hallgarten at 180-250m above sea level, the grapes ripen slower and longer than in the valley. This gives them a wonderfully fine and clear aroma. The typical "fragrant" aroma of slate opens up in the bouquet and combines with the delicate, cool structure to form a juicy Riesling with stimulating freshness and piquancy." - Peter Bernhard Kühn, Winemaker.
