The Wine

Country of origin:

New Zealand

Region:

Waipara

Sherwood Estate is a family owned winery, where both Jill and Dayne Sherwood are hands on with everything that happens from the vines in the fields to creating the finished wine. It is this dedication and passion which makes their wines truly special. This Chardonnay is picked from some of their finest Waipara sites, and is then divided at the winery into two different fermentation vessels. Some old oak barrels give this wine texture and touch toast on the finish, whilst stainless steel tanks allow the vibrant acidity, and flavours of lemon zest and white peach to shine through. The result is a wine with great harmony, drinkability and complexity.

The Winemaker

Petter Evans
Winemaker:

Petter Evans

In 1978 Dayne and Jill Sherwood planted 8 acres of vines in West Melton, west of Christchurch. It was a time of turmoil in the industry with the government paying people to pull vines out. Some people thought they were mad... but by putting their heart and soul into every aspect of every bottle of wine made over the last 40 years, they have earned the enviable reputation of creating formidable wines with absolute reliability. Along with their Chief Winemaker, Petter Evans, who is a veteran of the wine industry (he has been working in vineyards since the age of 15!) they are determined to live up to this reputation for another 40 years.

"A lovely Chardonnay, the bright citrus fruit flavours complement the light oak barrel aging, giving a medium bodied style. A great all-rounder for summer or winter with hot or cold foods." - Petter Evans, Winemaker.

It was actually quite yellow for such a young wine, too dry and high acidity in the after taste - certainly no honey flavour to it. I can only bear one small glass a night, so maybe that's a good thing! It is possible that it is better with food rather than as an aperitif.
