The Wine The Wine
New Zealand
Region:Waipara
Some of the best wines coming out of New Zealand at the moment are a) not made from Sauvignon Blanc and b) don't come from Marlborough. We often worry that the Kiwis have been pigeon-holed as one trick ponies, but here's a wine that will have that label quashed very quickly. A beautiful Pinot Gris from the Waipara Valley, full of tropical fruit and classic exotic spice. It's dry, but layered with richness. A great partner for spicy spring rolls and good plum dipping sauce.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Petter Evans
In 1978 Dayne and Jill Sherwood planted 8 acres of vines in West Melton, west of Christchurch. It was a time of turmoil in the industry with the government paying people to pull vines out. Some people thought they were mad... but by putting their heart and soul into every aspect of every bottle of wine made over the last 40 years, they have earned the enviable reputation of creating formidable wines with absolute reliability. Along with their Chief Winemaker, Petter Evans, who is a veteran of the wine industry (he has been working in vineyards since the age of 15!) they are determined to live up to this reputation for another 40 years.
"A refreshing and fruity wine, the Stratum Pinot Gris has impressive fruit flavours and complexity. Extended lees contact has produced a roundness to the flavours and a richness in the mouth. Made in an off-dry style this wine is smooth with a hint of sweetness on the palate." - Petter Evans, Winemaker.
