This wine gets its name from the bells in the bell tower which you can hear from the vineyard. In fact, it is said that before the trusty mobile phone was invented, they used to ring these bells to call the local workers out into the fields when it was time to harvest. This traditional image is a juxtaposition to the cutting-edge techniques and modern feel of this wine. Instead of a mature and dusty Reserva, this is a vibrant and fresh young Tempranillo which charms you with its playfulness!

This might not be a famous combination of grape varieties, like Shiraz Cabernet or Cabernet Merlot, but it is one we think has a bright future ahead of it, especially out in the Western Cape. Working with Winemaker Ryno Booysen we settled on a split of 70% Shiraz and 30% Malbec, where each variety works together in perfect harmony and results in a black-fruit filled, spicy red with a full body and notes of blueberry and damson.

The Pizo Cariñena is a deep-coloured, velvety wine with ripe black fruit galore. It gets its richness from very carefully limiting the yields in the vineyard, excellent soils and the ideal climate. The character it gets when expertly cultivated like it is here gives ripe bramble fruit, spice and earthy aromas. Its dark nature helps it match up beautifully with heavy dishes like beef stew and strongly flavoured game meats.

Nestled between the Olifants River Mountains to the west and the Cedarberg Mountains to the east, the Piekenierskloof Valley is where these three European grape varieties have found a new home within South Africa. Bold and brooding Tannat has roots in Southwest France, Tempranillo is considered the King of Spanish grapes, and Tinta Amarela (aka Trincadeira) has been making rich, fruity reds in Portugal for years! By blending this trio of grapes together, winemaker Ryno Booysen has managed to create a decidedly Spanish feel on the palate with sumptuous red fruits bound together by woody notes. An ideal easy drinking wine and a great example of the diversity of wines South Africa has to offer!
