Pinot Blanc

This versatile little grape is used in the production of many wines, including still, sparkling and sweet. Although it struggles to win the spotlight over over its Pinot Noir cousin, it does have lots to offer in the world of wine and plays an important role in many blends. Often compared to Chardonnay, it has a similar style and structure to this popular grape but hasn’t quite managed to gain the same reputation.

Pinot Blanc is often packed with notes of green fruit such as apple and pear, along with citrus flavours. Occasionally you will find a slight smokiness and mineral undertones on the palate, with hints of almond on the nose. Pinot Blanc also lends itself well to ageing, and when done so the flavour profile often becomes richer as the wine takes on flavours of the oak.

Similar to Chardonnay, the structure of the wine can vary depending on the terroir and vintage, as the grape itself has a fairly neutral character. However, in general Pinot Blanc is dry with a medium to full body and a high acidity and alcohol. When aged in oak, the wine becomes much richer and more tannic. Pinot Blanc is also used to produce dessert wines in certain regions such as Austria and Germany which are luxuriously sweet and textured.

Wine Regions

Pinot Blanc is thought to have originated from Burgundy where it is still grown today and is permitted in many Grand Cru vineyards. Unbeknown to most, it is also one of the permitted varieties in Champagne. However this grape is arguably most at home in Alsace where it is now most commonly found. Here it can often be blended with Auxerrois, which is a similar, less acidic white grape. Outside of France, Pinot Blanc is found in northern Italy where it is known as Pinot Bianco. Here it is lighter and crisper in style. It is also produced in smaller quantities in Germany, Austria and the USA.

Which food goes with Pinot Blanc

Pinot Blanc is a great match for a roast chicken or even with your Christmas dinner, particularly if the wine has been aged. It also makes a great pair with creamy dishes thanks to the high acidity. Soft cheese is also a good option, or if you are a fan of fish then opt for something white and flaky such as Cod.
