Grenache Blanc is bursting with flavours of green fruit, such as crunchy green apple and pear along with zingy citrus notes on the nose. The palate often leads with juicy pear flavours followed by slightly herbal nuances and a fresh minerality. Notes of mango and white peach are also common. This grape is also often aged in oak, resulting in flavours of baked apple and brioche developing.

Grenache Blanc is a full-bodied grape which thrives in dry conditions. Wines produced from this grape tend to be higher in alcohol, sitting around 13-15%, along with medium to low acidity and very dry in style. The grapes have good ageing ability, and are often aged in oak to add richness and body, giving the wine a plusher feel. If you are a Chardonnay fan then this one is definitely worth a try as both grapes have a number of similar qualities.

Wine Regions

Nowadays, Grenache Blanc is most at home in the Rhône Valley. Due to its ageing ability, winemakers will often blend this white grape with other varieties including Vermentino and Viognier. Grenache Blanc is also commonly found in the Roussanne region of France where it is blended into a sweet wine called Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturel – a type of wine where brandy is added to increase the sweetness. Outside of France, this white grape can be found in smaller quantities back in its native Spain, particularly in Navarra and Terra Alta. It’s also grown in New World regions including Australia, the USA and South Africa.

Grenache Blanc is a food friendly wine which pairs well with a number of different cuisines. Seafood is a great match, particularly shellfish such as lobster. It also pairs well with fragrant, and aromatic Asian foods or mild curries – just avoid anything spicy as the high alcohol content will intensify the heat.
