Vins de Provence Rosé: Perfect for Summer Sipping

Nestled between the Alps to the north, the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean to the south, on the classy Cote d’Azur, Provence is a region of stunning scenic beauty. Wine has been produced in this region for around 2,600 years, ever since the ancient Greeks founded the city of Marseille. In those days, the maceration techniques used today were not yet known, meaning that whilst wine would have resembled modern day rosé, the aromas were certainly very different. Provence therefore is one of the oldest vineyard regions in France specialising in this style of wine. And, to this day, Provence really is at the top of its game, producing world-class rosé that is beautifully refreshing and perfect for summer sipping on those warm evenings.

Provence benefits from mild winters and most importantly warm, long summer days drenched in sunshine. In fact, with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, the grapes have more than double that needed to fully ripen. The vineyards however are kept cool enough throughout the days by the famous mistral wind. This cooling effect stops the grapes from being scorched by the heat, allowing them to ripen beautifully to produce dry, pale, light wines that make the perfect pairing for a number of foods and occasions.

When taking a closer look at the region you will discover three main appellations which are the ‘go-to’ for rosé. The largest being Côtes de Provence AOC, which accounts for 70% of wine production in this region. This area really is the powerhouse for rosé, not only in Provence, but France as a whole. In fact, 92% of the wine produced within the Côtes de Provence is rosé, so it’s fair to say the winemakers here really know what they are doing.

The main grapes used here are Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre (also known as a GSM blend), Cinsault and Tibouren. Due to the size of this region, climate and conditions can vary slightly. As a result, Côtes de Provence AOC has five different terroir designations all producing rosé with slightly different nuances:

1. Fréjus is characterised by aromas of stone fruit, honey and spice and a subtle crispness.
2. Sainte-Victoire offers a crisp freshness, a hallmark of the designation, with fruity to floral aromas and the occasional citrus note.
3. La Londe rosé displays aromas of red fruits, citrus, tropical fruits and flowers, underscored by a tangy freshness and a slightly salty finish because of its proximity to the sea.
4. Pierrefeu has a light tangy freshness and aromas of red fruits, citrus and floral notes.
5. Notre-Dame des Anges (the newest designation) is bursting with red and tropical fruit flavours but with a faint sourness, typical of the designation.

Second in size, the appellation of Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence AOC is heavily influenced by the mistral wind creating a slightly cooler climate. Rosé is still the main product here and is usually produced from a GSM blend with the addition of Cinsault, Counoise and Caladoc, creating very well-rounded rosé which is fruit-forward and complex. The slightly cooler climate creates wines with an aromatic depth of flavour and a fresh finish. This makes the wine very easy going and drinkable.

Coteaux Varois en Provence AOC (aka ‘The Heart of Provence’) is the third and final appellation that screams rosé within this region. With an array of natural beauty formed by limestone mountains, this area of Provence has a collection of microclimates. With vineyards being at a slightly higher altitude in this area, the grapes enjoy a slightly longer and slower ripening process allowing the fruits to maintain good acidity and complex flavours, producing well-structured wines. Citrus fruit flavours are combined with more exotic stone fruit notes, balanced with a touch of red fruit, producing a very pale yet intense rosé that’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

The citrus notes will balance with the flavour of the chicken, leaving the palate feeling refreshed.
