You know a grape variety is pretty iconic when it’s awarded its very own global day of celebration. From its surprising origins in the vineyards of France, to the warmer climates of Argentina where it found fame, Malbec is one juicy red grape we just can’t get enough of!
The 17th April is officially known as World Malbec Day in the wine calendar. Not only is it a great excuse to celebrate our love of Malbec by cracking open a bottle, it’s also a date that marks a significant moment in Argentina’s winemaking history.
Back in 1853, Argentina’s President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento started looking to France for viticultural inspiration. He wanted to take Argentinian winemaking to the next level, and could see that French winemakers were truly masters of their craft. On 17th April, he asked a French soil expert to bring vines over so that Argentina could experiment with new grape varieties. This momentous delivery included Malbec. And the rest, as they say, is history!
You can pretty much guarantee that Malbec will tickle your taste buds if you enjoy rich, drinkable wines that are smooth and fruity (what’s not to like, eh?). Although if raspberry and cherry flavours are more your thing, try opting for a cooler country like France. For deeper fruit flavours of plum and blackberry, a bottle of Argentinian Malbec will tick those boxes every time.

Perez Cruz Cot Limited Edition 2017 – A velvety soft Malbec, crammed with dark fruit flavours including sweet plums, inky cherries and vanilla. This Chilean beauty is a must-try for red wine lovers.
Domaine De La Charmoise Vinifera Malbec Marionnet 2015 – A bold, dense Malbec packed with masses of fruit character and charm, this beautiful French wine is incredible when paired with lamb or beef dishes.
Florel Reserve Malbec 2019 – A nose of chocolate and plenty of dried fruit character. The Florel Malbec is another grilled meat match-up that combines French finesse with Argentinian weight.
