Cabernet Franc

The parent grape to both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; Cabernet Franc is a classic black grape that has been around for centuries. Although related to these two common varieties, Cabernet Franc is generally much lighter in style and flavour. Originating from Libournais in Bordeaux, this grape now thrives across the globe in cool, moderate and warm regions.

Cabernet Franc is quite pale in colour and is reasonably light in flavour. On the nose, aromas of fresh red fruits will come through with hints of green pepper, which can be surprising to some considering this is a red. On the palate the same fresh fruit flavours are clear with notes of strawberry and raspberry. In some warmer climates, these flavours can become cooked. Peppery tones are also common.

Cabernet Franc is a dry red wine, with a medium body. Medium to high tannins are balanced by a medium to high acidity creating a well-rounded vino. Lighter in colour and flavour than Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is often used in blends to add brighter, fruitier notes and to help lift the palate. However, some great single varietals are also produced.

Wine Regions

Cabernet Franc originates from Libournais in Bordeaux. It is still commonly found here, which is unsurprising considering its use in Bordeaux blends. However, it is now more commonly found in the Loire Valley where it thrives in the cool to moderate climate. Elsewhere, this black grape is commonly found in Italy, particularly in Tuscany where the warmer southern climate produces wines with deeper flavours of black fruits such as blackberry and black cherry. Looking further afield, Cabernet Franc is grown in areas of California, particularly Sierra Foothills, and in Colchagua Valley in Chile.

What Food Goes with Cabernet Franc?

Due to being slightly lighter in body than some of the big classic reds, this wine can work well with slightly less intense foods. A great combination would be a nice roast chicken or even roast pork. The slightly higher acidity also means it is great with slightly fattier foods. Cabernet Franc is also a great match for soft cheeses.
