As the Queen celebrates 70 glorious years on the throne this summer, we’re marking the momentous occasion with a handcrafted, commemorative English sparkling wine that’s fit for royalty, and your upcoming Jubilee parties!

We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to honour the Queen’s sparkling reign of 70 years than with a limited edition sparkling wine that’s made especially for her. So, we teamed up with our friends at Henners to produce 500 bottles of premium English sparkling brut at their quaint little coastal vineyard in Herstmonceux, East Sussex. Our Wine Buyer, Sophie Lord, summed up the team effort perfectly:
“This has been a real passion-project for the whole team at Virgin Wines. It was important to us that we had the best possible wine to offer, whilst keeping it relevant to the occasion, which is why we opted for an English sparkling.”
Every little detail was carefully considered, right down to the flowers that featured on the label gracing the front of the bottle. Inspired by a coat of arms, the label itself is the shape of a shield, while the design is a whimsical take on a royal crest that shows bunting, a platinum crown and the Queen’s favourite flower – lily of the valley (which apparently symbolises joy and happiness!).
Our Platinum Jubilee English Sparkling Brut has been made using carefully handpicked Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes – the same grape blend famously used in Champagne. The team at Henners have also used the traditional Champagne method to make the wine, resulting in a high quality, acidic bubbly that gives the finest fizz on offer in France a run for its money!
As Sophie explains:
“The top winemaking counties in England share a similar climate and terroir to the Champagne region of France, meaning winemakers can grow the same grapes and follow the same winemaking methods. Our commemorative bottle showcases a homegrown wine that rivals the iconic fizz.”
So, expect an elegant English take on the famous French fizz. On the nose you’ll be greeted by sourdough aromas, followed by crunchy green apple, pear and toasted brioche on the palate. A light, crisp body and a lively, persistent mousse create a wonderfully refreshing mouthfeel with a long finish that leaves you wanting more.
