Our Best Vegan Wines
By James Batt
‘Aren’t all wines vegan?’ I hear you ask. Well, the short answer is no they are not, and you can find out exactly why that is right here. But for now, without further ado, here are our best vegan wines you need to get your hands.
Best Vegan Red Wine
Perez Cruz Single Vineyard La Higuera Block 2019
This multi award-winning red from Perez Cruz has been exclusively blended for us here at Virgin Wines. Packed with intense spicy notes, this red has plenty of dark fruit flavours on the palate with layers of vanilla and hints of mint. This wine is the perfect pairing for those ‘meatier’ style dishes such as vegan burgers on the barbecue or perhaps a vegan bolognaise.
Ripper Shiraz 2021
This little Aussie beauty is wonderfully juicy with notes of black cherry and blackberry on the palate. From a third generation winemaker, David King focuses on sustainability in the vineyard, from re-using waste water to using solar panels to help power their production. Enjoy this one with some grilled vegetable skewers or a hearty mushroom stew.
Ripper Shiraz 2021 – £10.99
Finca Manzanos Seleccion de la Familia Rioja 2020
This classic Rioja is a rich and juicy red produced by the Manzanos family, who have been producing wine for generations since 1890! This classy vino is deliciously well-rounded with notes of raspberry and plum on the palate laced with hints of cocoa and cinnamon. It’s a perfect match for dishes with a slight kick, such as spicy vegan Enchiladas.
Three Gables Western Cape Cinsault Malbec 2021
Three Gables has been a customer favourite here at VW for a number of years, and really highlights what this New World region has to offer. From the Western Cape in South Africa, this vino has delicate floral notes and herbaceous hints, complemented by bold raspberry flavours. Full-bodied and well structured, this Cinsault and Malbec blend is a match made in heaven with baked Aubergine dishes.
Que Syrah Syrah
We are off to the States now with this elegant red from the Lodi region of California. This is an easy-drinking Shiraz, which can be drunk on its own, or is equally as good with food. Rich in flavour, with notes of cinnamon and pepper, this wine is difficult to resist! Pair with a spicy pasta or a light salad for the ultimate match.
Que Syrah Syrah 2020 – £10.99
Best Vegan White Wine
Brio Pinot Grigio
This charming little Italian Pinot Grigio is a customer favourite, which just happens to be vegan. From the world-renowned Veneto region, this white is full of fresh apple and ripe pear notes, with a hint of citrus freshness on the finish. A glass of this on a hot summer’s day with a light Greek salad is pure bliss.
Brio Pinot Grigio 2021 – £10.99
The Black Pig Sauvignon Blanc 2021
You can always rely on the Black Pig team to produce a show stopping wine, and this one is no exception. This Aussie Savvy B is bursting with lime notes and passionfruit flavours, creating a crisp and refreshing wine with a wonderful structure. Another summer classic, which is perfect on its own or paired with an asparagus dish for an elegant combo.
The Black Pig Sauvignon Blanc 2021 – £12.99
Kraft des Landes Gruner Veltliner 2020
This intriguing wine is a hidden gem from a wine region which is under most people’s radar. Austrian wine is up and coming, and this white crafted from the native Gruner Veltliner grape is a cracking example of what this region has to offer. Think Sauvignon Blanc, but with an added oomph! Crisp and dry with a natural spice and richness, this vino has notes of lemon and stone fruits with a nice weight on the palate. Try with Asian inspired food for a heavenly match.
Pizo Garnacha Blanca 2020
Spain isn’t all about the reds, this region produces some cracking whites, too. This Garnacha Blanca is understated in the mouth with a mineral texture and citrus flare on the finish. There are even some delicate floral aromas in there too making for a well-rounded vino. A fantastic match with a creamy risotto dish, or some soft vegan cheese.
Pizo Garnacha Blanca 2020 – £10.99
La Fama Sauvignon Gris 2021
We always love to get our hands on something new and a little different – and this is just that! A Chilean Sauvignon Gris, bursting with bright citrus aromas and a mouth-watering acidity, with a ripe fruity finish. You can even expect to find notes of blanched almonds and a delicate floral character. Ideal for calming the spiciness of a curry.
La Fama Sauvignon Gris 2021 – £10.99
Best Vegan Rosé Wine
Esprit de Provence Rosé Cotes de Provence 2020
If you are a rosé drinker then the chances are you are a fan of Provence, and rightly so. This pretty pink wine has that signature pale pink hue and is fresh and fragrant with a delicate and youthful zest. A touch of rose petal and watermelon on the nose entices you into this vino. Try with a light salad or a fresh tomato pasta for the ultimate match.
Gypsy Lee Rose White Zinfandel 2020
An exciting rosé which is frivolous and fun! Deeper in colour and richer in flavour than other rosés, this wine has bright fruity aromas of strawberry and redcurrant, with a delicate palate and a well-rounded finish. Serve this one well chilled at your next party alongside some nibbles and you’ll be on to a winner!
