Vermentino

This light skinned, white grape is unknown to most, yet produces some exceptional wine at surprisingly low prices. These grapes hang in pyramidal bunches and are best suited to slopes facing the sea, where they benefit from the additional light reflected off the water. Vermentino was originally thought to have come from Spain, however it is now believed this grape variety was first grown in Italy, where it is now most commonly found.

Vermentino traditionally offers up lively aromas of pear and white peach, along with citrusy notes of lime and pink grapefruit. Some styles can offer up creamier, richer flavours which come from the addition of a special bacteria after fermentation, which results in a process called Malolactic Conversion taking place. The bacteria feeds on the malic acid in the grapes and produces rich, buttery flavours, adding a slightly oily texture to the wine.

Vermentino wines have good acidity, sometimes with a hint of saltiness, due to the proximity of most of these vineyards to the sea. It generally has a medium to low sweetness and a light body which makes for an overall very refreshing wine. The alcohol level is also medium, creating a well-rounded vino. If you are a Sauvignon Blanc fan, this is one for you to try. Vermentino can also have a slightly bitter, almondy flavour to finish, which can make it an interesting one to match with food.

Wine Regions

Vermentino is most commonly found in the western Mediterranean. Italy in particular is the biggest producer of this grape where it thrives close to the coast on the island of Sardinia. On the mainland it can also be found in Liguria and Piedmont. It’s also found in reasonable quantities on the French island of Corsica. Winemakers have also begun to experiment with this grape in New World countries. Notably, it has been taken on by a small number of winemakers in California, however it has not yet shown any signs of achieving the popularity of other grapes here. Popularity is also growing in Australia where it is being produced as an alternative to some of the Aussie classics.

What Food Goes with Vermentino?

When it comes to pairing this white with food, the oily character and slight bitterness complements medium weight dishes loaded with herbs and spices. Dishes such as a garlic and pesto pasta would be perfect. If fish is more your thing, a richer, meatier type would be a good option here such as halibut. When it comes to cheese, softer cheeses are a good way to go, such as ricotta, buffalo mozzarella or even feta.
