Nero d’Avola
A grape that may be unknown to most, Nero d’Avola is a real hidden gem of the red wine world. Commonly found soaking up the sun on the coast of Sicily, this grape produces some exceptional single varietal wines as well as being used in mainland Italian blends. The great thing about wines produced from this grape is they have remained extremely affordable due to the grape’s low profile. Nero d’Avola is a powerful, fruit-driven red, packed full of bold dark fruit flavours. Most commonly aged, wines from this variety are bursting with flavours of black cherry and plum, with hints of dried fruit such as prune. Tertiary aromas of liquorice and tobacco are also common. Younger varietals are lighter in flavour with juicy notes of red cherry and raspberry, although still just as fruit-driven and vibrant.

Most commonly found on the eastern coast of Sicily, Nero d’Avola thrives here as it loves the elevation where cooler temperatures help to reduce the alcohol levels. It is also often imported to mainland Italy where it is used in blends to add body and flavour to lighter varieties. Elsewhere in the world, very few vineyards have taken it on largely due to being such an unknown variety. A few winemakers in warm climate regions such as South Australia and California grow Nero d’Avola in small quantities, but Italy is still very much the ‘go to’ region.

When it comes to pairing this red with food, it’s best to stick to the classic red wine pairings that come to mind. Think hearty beef stews, or perhaps barbecued steaks with a peppercorn sauce. Being an Italian wine, Italian food is also a great option here. A rich beef ragu pasta dish or a meat feast pizza would complement wine made from this grape perfectly.
