Carménère Grape Variety

Carménère

Carménère is primarily considered native to Chile, although its origins in fact lie in Bordeaux, France. It’s a relatively slow-ripening grape variety that requires a lot of sunshine to reach its full potential, which makes it difficult to grow in the cooler, sometimes wet springs of France. Particularly susceptible to phylloxera, the grape variety was nearly obliterated entirely in the 1870s because of infestation. Fortunately however, during the 1850s, Chilean winegrowers unknowingly imported Carménère vines as well as the intended Merlot vines – a mistake that may have saved the grape from extinction! It wasn’t until 1994 that the Chileans realised the mistake and in 1998, the Chilean Department of Agriculture officially recognised Carménère as its own grape variety.
