A Quick Guide to the Wines of Rioja
What Kind of Wine is Rioja?
Rioja is a classic example of a style of wine produced in a certain area becoming so iconic over the years that the wine is named after the region rather than the grape variety. The region itself is a DOCa – the highest classification in Spanish wine regulation, for regions of outstanding quality – meaning only wines produced within the area can be called Rioja (just like Champagne!)
The full and fruity Rioja red we all know and love is made from a blend of juicy black grapes that thrive in the beautiful Spanish sunshine. Tempranillo makes up the majority of the blend, providing power and bold flavours, while Garnacha is often added to bring in delicate notes of strawberry and spice.
Tannins are typically smooth and flavours are complex. Yet variations in style can be found across the different subareas within this famous region; Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Oscar Cárdenas, Sommelier from Armen Wines, explains what to expect from Rioja and its three sub-regions.
Key Facts to Know About Rioja Wines
- If it’s not 100% Tempranillo, it’ll be a blend with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan)
- Years of ageing in American oak gives Rioja it’s silky smooth tannins
- Its vibrant fruitiness is thanks to the Spanish sunshine
- It’s not all about red – Rioja Blanco (White Rioja) has been gaining traction over recent years. Expect light and lemony or full and nutty from these whites
- Rioja Rosado (rosé) is known for its lively strawberry and cherry aromas
- Riojas are categorised by their age:
- Crianza means it’s been aged for at least two years
- Reserva is three years
- Gran Reserva is more than five
What Does Rioja Pair With?
A classic Rioja red goes well with so many foods, from cheeseboards and tapas to meaty dishes. Its elegance and bright fruit flavours make it very food-friendly, and it’s especially great with Spanish cuisine.
