Glorious Gins to Try this World Gin Day
By Lorna Povey
Mermaid Gin
Made with locally foraged rock samphire on the Isle of Wight, the mesmerising small-batch Mermaid Gin is said to be “made from a mermaid’s kiss”. A beautifully crafted London Dry gin made from 10 botanicals – including Sicilian lemon zest, Sussex grown coriander, liquorice root, and locally sourced elderflower and samphire.
Serve with juniper berries, a little lemon zest and plenty of ice for a refreshing G&T. Or complement its signature rock samphire botanical with samphire garnish and a thin slice of cucumber. Keep the tonic simple, and let the Mermaid seduce you.
Land of Saints Organic Cornish Gin
The Land of Saints Organic Cornish Gin is certainly a craft gin to feel good about drinking – for many reasons! It’s a fresh, floral and zesty gin that’s distilled using organically grown botanicals – both for environmental reasons and for purity of flavour. Serve with an elderflower tonic and pink grapefruit garnish and you’ve got a beautiful refreshing G&T for summer.
The best thing about it though is that all profits raised by this gin (min 50p per bottle) go to Fauna & Flora International, an international wildlife conservation organisation, supported by the one and only Sir David Attenborough.
No.3 London Dry Gin
Made using only six botanicals yet achieving a complex and impressive palate, No.3 London Dry Gin is a bit of a masterpiece. With juniper, orange peel, cardamom, grapefruit peel, coriander and angelica root at its core, this outstanding gin is distilled under the watchful eye of Dr David Clutton – the only person in the world with a PhD in Gin! Every ingredient is weighed out with precision and each batch distilled in a carefully selected 100-year-old copper still pot.
Perhaps not surprisingly, this magical drop has won the World’s Best Gin Award a whopping four times since its launch! So, of course, we had to include this in our World Gin Day line-up.
Manly Spirits Coastal Citrus Gin
The Manly Spirits Coastal Citrus Gin is an exceptionally refreshing summer tipple with earthy, herbaceous undertones. Crafted in sunny Australia’s Manly Beach, these beautifully packaged gins capture the carefree lifestyle of Australia’s northern beaches impeccably. You really can’t get more summery than an ice-loaded G&T made with this!
Using sustainably sourced local botanicals from land and sea, these flavours are truly unique to Australia, giving a zesty citrus-led palate that is sure to cool you down on a hot day.
Fishers Gin
Heading to the beaches of Suffolk now, we have the Aldeburgh-produced Fishers Gin. With this one you’ll experience flavours that express the English coastline, thanks to its 13 local botanicals including rock samphire, spignel, bog myrtle, dittany, lovage, sea purslane and wood avens.
We say to keep this one fairly simple when it comes to serving, but add an orange peel garnish and sprig of rosemary to bring out some of those fragrant and herbal nuances in the gin.
Silent Pool Gin
Taking its name from the ‘silent pool’ hidden away on the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, Silent Pool Gin is a real hidden gem. Using 24 individual botanicals, it’s fair to say this is an intriguing blend that’s packed with character! An array of fruit, herbs and spices in the mix produce a full and flavourful gin that’s perfect for an afternoon in the sun.
Make this even more refreshing by garnishing with a large twist of orange peel and as much ice as you can fit in the glass.
Bullards Coastal Gin
The Bullards Coastal Gin is a stunning Norfolk-produced gin made with hand foraged botanicals sourced from the county’s famously scenic coastline. Wonderful flavours and aromas come through from the marsh samphire, sea aster, sea purslane, and rich woody Douglas fir ingredients, bringing a true sense of the British seaside to your senses.
Serve with some blackberries and fresh lime peel garnish, heaps of ice and a simple tonic to let those fantastic seaside flavours shine through.
L&C Limited Edition London Dry Gin
The L&C Limited Edition London Dry Gin is a refined and sophisticated London Dry Gin with key tasting notes of lime leaf (the ‘L’) and cardamom (the ‘C’). Created by our Head Spirits Buyer, Dave, and Master Distiller, Jake Wilson, the luscious L&C is a fusion of Dave’s keen eye for quality spirits and Jake’s distilling prowess.
Dave is on a mission to create a collection of exclusive, premium spirits with the very best distillers around, and L&C is a fine example of that. We’re over the moon with how it’s turned out, and it appears to be going down a storm with our customers too! Definitely a new one to try this summer if you haven’t already had the pleasure.
Distil:31 Gripper Old Tom Gin
Inspired by the beautiful Grade I listed mill we’re lucky enough to call home at VW HQ, our Distil:31 spirits range has an industrial theme that pays homage to the printworks that once operated in the mill. The Distil:31 Gripper Old Tom Gin is one of the best in the range, crafted especially for our customers who are crazy about gin.
With layers of texture and flavour, you’ll find a wonderful, rich citrus palate with piney juniper notes. Best kept simple if you love a good, classic G&T, but also makes an equally great martini. One for the shopping list if you fancy some gin-based cocktails this summer!
