Let’s start with Prosecco, the most iconic of Italian sparkling wines. With over 500 million bottles of the good stuff produced every year, and billions of glasses consumed, Prosecco is the reigning champion in the world’s most popular sparkling wines.

Produced exclusively in the northern Italian region of Veneto, from the local Glera grape variety, Prosecco is adored for its fruity and floral flavours of apple, pear, honeydew melon and honeysuckle. It comes in a variety of styles, from extra brut to sweet, and from pronounced fizz to gentle bubbles, but is always generally much lighter and less yeasty than Champagne.

Just like everyone else across the world, we can’t get enough of the stuff here at Virgin Wines, and we’re keen to share our favourite Proseccos with you!

We’re starting with the Prosecco of the moment, the Corvezzo Prosecco DOC Treviso Organic Extra Dry. It’s vegan and organic, so appeals to absolutely everyone, and is certainly a cut above the rest in terms of body and flavour, made with excruciating attention to detail. Expect dreamy aromas of crisp green apple and freshly sliced pear, followed by fine bubbles and lemon juice hints on the palate. Just divine!

Corvezzo Prosecco DOC Treviso Organic Extra Dry – £14.99

The multi award-winning Senti Prosecco Extra Dry NV is one of the greatest Proseccos around. With four medals under its belt, it’s a delicious, celebratory fizz that’s popular with our customers for special occasions all year round. Packed with orchard fruit and citrus intensity, the Senti makes a very refreshing aperitif indeed.

Out of the phenomenal success of Prosecco, a fruity pink version of the Italian fizz has been born. Prosecco Rosé became an official sparkling wine DOC only in 2020, so is still relatively unknown in comparison. Made from 85% Glera and 15% Pinot Noir, Prosecco Rosé offers notes of ripe pear and red berry with a subtle sweetness, and our Senti Prosecco Rosé Extra Dry is an exceptional example of this new style of pink fizz.

In terms of fizziness, there are three main styles of Prosecco – Spumante, which is fully sparkling, Frizzante, which is semi-sparkling, and Tranquillo, which is so gentle it’s virtually still. The Ombra Prosecco Frizzante is a stunning semi-sparkling that’s undoubtedly our top recommendation for those who enjoy a lighter style of bubbly. It’s fruity, food-friendly and crisp with a tangerine freshness and not too dry.

Our Best Italian Sparkling Wines

Prosecco gets most of the limelight, but there are many other types of Italian sparkling wine produced elsewhere in Italy. They each very much have their own followings of fans, but perhaps just not on a global scale (yet!).

In other Italian wine regions such as Piemonte, you’ll find elegant Italian sparkling wines made from white grape varieties like Moscato (aka Muscat Blanc), Trebbiano and Garganega. These sparkling wines tend to be a speciality of northern Italy, where the climate allows winemakers to craft a lovely, fruity and refreshing style of bubbly.

The Solpiantez Spumante Brut Millesimato is every bit as good as any Prosecco you’ve fallen in love with. A graceful blend of Garganega and Trebbiano grapes grown in the fresh, mountainous climes of northern Italy, this is a wonderful Italian brut that makes a great talking point at dinner parties. A crisp body and delightful lemon kick on the finish make it a fantastic fizz for pairing with food.

Described by one of our very own Wine Buyers as one of the most refreshing drinks in the world of wine (a bold statement, we know!), Moscato d’Asti is a popular type of Italian sparkling wine that’s renowned for its lightly fizzy style and fragrant aromas of orange blossom, grapefruit and peach. The Tenuta Olim Bauda Moscato d’Asti Centive is a fabulous example of this, expressing an enticing bouquet of orange blossom, grapefruit, ginger and elderflower, followed by a light, effervescent body.
