The Wine

Country of origin:

Chile

Region:

Maipo Valley

The "LOTE" range are all followed by a number, not just selected at random, but chosen to highlight an important backstory about each wine. 96 represents the first vintage the De Martino family bottled and labelled a wine as a varietal Carménère, the first estate to do this in Chile, setting out their stall that Carménère should be championed for its unique characters and not hidden behind the popularity of Merlot. A mouth coating and juicy red which is very gastronomic and pairs well with pan fried duck breast.

The Winemaker

Nicolas Perez
Winemaker:

Nicolás Peréz

Nicolás Peréz works alongside the fourth generation of the De Martino family. Although he grew up in Santiago, Chile, during his teenage years he travelled constantly to Chilean Patagonia, where he worked on the culinary project of one of his brothers. This is where he first came into contact with the world of wine, getting to know the different producers that were operating at that time. This experience was key to his decision, at the young age of 14, to become a winemaker. From that moment on, this goal was central to all the decisions he took about his life and studies. Despite his youth, he has gained substantial experience working in different international wineries in California and Australia, before returning to his home of Chile.

At De Martino, the winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the first producer to bottle single-varietal Carménère in Chile, the first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year.

"We blended this with Dave (Virgin Wines Buyer) using carefully selected parcels from our vineyards around the winery in Isla di Maipo. This was a difficult vintage (frost in spring and rain around harvest) so in order to achieve the right quality levels for Virgin Wines during blending we included some wine from our most prized Carménère vineyard - Alto de Piedras - boosting the richness and finish of the bottled wine." - Nicolás Peréz, Winemaker.

Love it. Smooth. Definitely buy again

Wow! Superb! Such a depth of flavour. Bold thick and goupy, would be even better in winter!
