How many glasses of wine are in a standard bottle?
Let’s start with the basics. A standard bottle of red, white or rosé wine will give you approximately five glasses based on a serving size of 150ml per glass. In many pubs and restaurants a small glass of wine measures 125ml, a medium is 175ml and a large is 250ml, so 150ml is a good amount to go for at home and with friends.
If you’re drinking red wine and using larger glasses that help awaken those aromas, your measurements will look smaller once served. Our top advice would be don’t be tempted to overfill your glass so it looks like a more generous pour. Embrace that glass half-full measure and give it a good swirl and sniff before savouring your first sip.
How many millilitres are in a bottle of wine?
A standard bottle of wine is 750ml, although there are smaller bottles of wine you can get, for example a mini is 187ml. Magnums of wine are the most popular type of ‘supersized’ bottle and these tend to be 1,500ml (although you can get even bigger than this in some places, typically directly from the winery that produces it rather than a retailer).

How many servings do you get in a magnum?
With a magnum of wine being 1,500 litres, which is the equivalent to two standard bottles, you should be able to serve ten 150ml glasses of wine from it.
The wine in a magnum bottle ages more slowly than in a standard bottle because the exposure of the wine to oxygen is reduced. For many wines, especially fine reds and Champagne, this allows further complexity of flavours to develop so you can get even better quality. Even more reason to grab a magnum bottle for that party!
How many glasses of Prosecco or Champagne are in a bottle?
Other types of wine need different measures for various reasons. Sparkling wine such as Prosecco or Champagne is best served out of a flute glass which contains less wine than a standard wine glass.
The standard serving measure in a flute for sparkling wine is 125ml, so you get six modest servings per bottle. Of course, you also have the option to pour slightly more and have five servings if the mood takes you.
Fortified and dessert wines
Fortified wines like port and dessert wines like Sauternes are always served in smaller glasses. Because these wines usually have a high alcohol content and tend to be very rich and sweet it’s best to enjoy them in smaller measures.
The standard serving glass should be around 60ml so, for fortified wines, you’ll get just over 12 glasses per 750ml bottle. Dessert wine bottles, on the other hand, are very often sold in half of a standard bottle, meaning you’ll get six glasses out of a 375ml bottle.
