From 1850 to now, Victoria has cemented itself as a region of winemaking that deserves the reputation of its Australian peers. In a relatively short span compared to other regions, its 21 wine regions have flourished, each showcasing a unique depth and variety. Discover what makes Victoria’s wine landscape so exceptional and why it could be your next go-to for a standout bottle.
As one of the smallest but most biodiverse states in Australia, Victoria offers an unparalleled terroir. From the chill of the southern coast, shaped by Antarctic currents, to the frosty peaks of the Alps in the north, the region’s climate and soils are unmatched. Home to over 800 wineries, Victoria boasts the largest concentration of family-owned, artisan producers in the country. Whether you’re after cool-climate chardonnay, Italian-inspired varietals, or world-class fortified wines, Victoria’s wine styles are as diverse as they come.
Thanks to this unique terrier of a cool climate in sunny Australia, they’re able to produce lovely Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which have become synonymous across the wide spread of regions. Let’s begin in the Yarra Valley, where it all started. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay make up 60% of the region’s production, and whilst there are plenty of other grapes and styles being produced this is where the region really shines. A great example of what Yarra Valley can produce is the Yarra Yering Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021.
This is the Yarra Valley bottled. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted until only the true cream of the crop is left exclusively for this wine. It’s then barrel fermented in different styles, with 30% being new oak. Whilst it great to drink now, you could set it down for 10 years to bring out all the hidden tertiary flavours.
Packed with flavours of toasty oak and ripe stone fruits, with an orchard fruit freshness. There’s a green apple crunch balanced by the oak tannin framework which creates a long finish. It’s complex with plenty of finesse to make a brilliantly tasty wine.
Home of the Pinot Noir is the appropriately named Pinot Coast. The Pinot Coast of Victoria is controlled by its cool climate that allows it to make top-quality Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay. There are three distinct regions in the Pinot Coast – Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula, and Gippsland – all of which produce the fruity maritime wines that have given the area its name. These cool climate wines rival their French counterparts, with the range of terroir being able to produce site-specific Shiraz, Arneis, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
