Get to know Ribera del Duero wines this autumn, red wine lovers. A fine wine producing area nestled in the heart of Spain, this region is quickly emerging as one of the world’s top wine destinations, and we can see why. Join us as we explore what makes Ribera del Duero wines so special.
Ribera del Duero’s winemaking roots stretch back over 2,000 years. Since becoming recognised as a Denomination of Origin (DO) in 1982, its reputation has gone from strength to strength, with local winemakers focussing their efforts on ensuring quality in every drop. There is a deep understanding that the terroir is precious here and must be preserved for future generations, which has led to more winemakers embracing sustainable practices in the pursuit of fine wine.
The region’s red wines in particular have attracted a lot of attention for their sheer excellence. So, what’s the secret to these showstopping reds? We take a closer look at how Ribera del Duero is able to craft such masterpieces.
Climate and geography play a huge part in shaping the delicious drops produced in Ribera del Duero. Located in the Castilla y León region of northern Spain, this winemaking area spans approximately 115 kilometres along the Duero River, and its name (which means “Riverbanks of the Duero” in Spanish) is a reflection of the region’s close connection with the river that nourishes its vineyards.
What truly sets Ribera del Duero apart, however, is its high-altitude vineyards. They are some of the highest in the Northern Hemisphere, reaching over 1,000 metres above sea level. The high altitude combined with the region’s unique continental climate creates ideal conditions for making incredible wines.
Summers in Ribera del Duero are long and hot, with very little rainfall, while winters are harsh, with temperatures that can plummet as low as -20°C. This dramatic temperature variation, which can swing as much as 60°C between seasons, plays a crucial role in developing the distinctive character of the grapes. These extreme conditions result in smaller, thicker-skinned grapes that produce characterful wines with delightfully concentrated flavours.
The diversity of terroir further adds to the complexity of these Spanish wines. The region’s vineyards are planted in a mix of clay, limestone and stony soils, each contributing different qualities to the grapes. The terroir, altitude and climate all contribute to Ribera del Duero wines’ sense of place, making them totally unique to this part of the world.
While a range of different wine styles are produced in Ribera del Duero, this region is best known for its fine red wines, with Tempranillo being the star of the show. Known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinto País, Tempranillo is the dominant grape across all vineyards, and it thrives in the region’s challenging climate. The Denomination of Origin regulations require that at least 75% of any red wine produced in Ribera del Duero must be made from Tempranillo, though many of the region’s very best wines are crafted entirely from this popular grape.
Ribera del Duero Tempranillo is characterized by its deep colour, rich fruit flavours and firm tannins, making it an excellent candidate for aging. The region’s winemakers have mastered the art of producing wines that develop beautifully with age, creating complexity and depth over time.
Tempranillo also plays a significant role in rosé (or rosado) wine production here, allowing the region to craft pink wines that are richer and more robust than rosés from other areas, offering more body, colour and flavour. White wine is the only category that Tempranillo doesn’t influence – these are made from at least 75% Albillo Mayor, a local grape variety that thrives in Ribera del Duero’s climate.
One of the hallmarks of Ribera del Duero wines is the strict aging requirements imposed on its winemakers. These regulations are similar to those found in Spain’s other famous wine region, Rioja, and help to ensure the high quality of the wines produced.
The aging process is what gives Ribera del Duero wines their distinctive characteristics. Wines labelled as Joven or Roble are typically aged for a shorter period, resulting in fruit-forward, easy-drinking wines. They spend little time in oak barrels, allowing the pure expression of the Tempranillo grape to shine through.
For those seeking more complexity, Crianza wines are aged for a minimum of two years, with at least one year spent in oak. This process imparts additional layers of flavour, such as toasted oak, sweet vanilla and spice, to the wine while maintaining the freshness of the fruit.
Reserva wines, aged for at least three years (with one year in oak), offer even greater complexity, with a balance of fruit, oak and secondary characteristics like earth and leather.
Finally, Gran Reserva wines are the pinnacle of Ribera del Duero winemaking. These wines are aged for a minimum of five years, with at least two years in oak barrels. Gran Reserva wines are known for their impressive depth, structure and ability to age for decades, making them some of the most sought-after red wines from the region.
