Chateau Pailhas Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2009

Chateau Pailhas Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2009

  • "2009 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux." says Robert Parker. 'Nuff said!
  • A Merlot-driven delight. Only the Hartley's factory has more fruit.
  • Drink now, or cellar - you'll be delighted whichever route you choose.

The Besson family took charge of this 14th century Chateau in 1906 and have continued to release excellent wines since gaining their 1st Gold Medal in 1912! The 2009 vintage has been raved about since the first tastings in early 2010, and justifiably so. If you seek the majesty of this most-vaunted of years but without pocket-busting expense, this is the way to go. Principally Merlot, there's also cassis-like Cabernet Sauvignon and minty Cabernet Franc, all seamlessly integrated. Excellent value!

Lying at 45* latitude, Bordeaux is considered relatively northerly. This estate enjoys has a good exposure, allowing full ripening hours during the summer and the strong influences of the moderating maritime climate. This allows the winemaker to work with nature and help show the vintage in the best way possible, with the 2009 vintage this was made easier than other years as nature was especially kind.

Dark ruby red, it has a very deft touch of oak on the nose and palate which both enriches and rounds the edges into a smooth, well balanced claret.
