Region:Evia
Situated to the east of mainland Greece, the island of Evia is well known for its white sand beaches and idyllic landscapes. Nestled further inland is the Mountrichas family’s Avantis Estate. Growing grapes since 1830, they have been pioneers in the winemaking of Evia for nearly 200 years. With a great focus on tradition, they pride themselves on pioneering rare native varieties like Mavrokoudoura. They have used their expertise to craft this native grape into an elegant yet powerful red. Expect rich black fruits on the nose followed by a touch of pepper, liquorice and clove on the palate.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Apostolos Mountrichas
The Mountrichas family have been growing grapes since 1830 and, today, Apostolos and his wife Lenga make the wines and run Avantis Estate. The 30-hectare property is located on the island of Evia, just off the east coast of Greece. By focusing on grapes native to the island of Evia and Greece, they are pioneers in the Greek wine world, winning multiple awards for their expertise.
"At the beginning of the century, Mavrokoudoura was almost extinct. I knew I had to revive this variety and keep it in the spotlight. I am proud to present our Avantis Estate Mavrokoudoura, made from our vines which are now 20 years old." - Apostolos Mountrichas, Winemaker.
