The Wine

Country of origin:

France

Region:

Bordeaux - Saint-Émilion

Within Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC, only the best estates are allowed to use the title ‘Grand Cru Classé’ on their wines, and since 1955 Château La Marzelle has been one of them. The Château itself dates back to at least 1821 and takes its name from one of its early owners, Edouard de La Marzelle. Today, its 17 hectares of vineyards are positioned on the exceptional plateau between Saint-Émilion and Libourne, better known as the Haute Terrasse de Saint-Émilion. From north to south, Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, Figeac and La Marzelle all lie on this narrow strip of land. The wine is made from 80% Merlot which gives it a silky roundness and velvety tannins, 15% Cabernet Franc which gives fruity aromatics and structure to the blend and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon which gives this wine longevity. It's no wonder that this wine comes highly rated by both Jancis Robinson and James Suckling.

The Winemaker

Sébastien Desmoulin
Winemaker:

Sébastien Desmoulin

It was in 1998 that Belgian industrialists Jacqueline and Jean-Jacques Sioen fell under the spell of La Marzelle and they put their passion and their know-how towards the service of the Château. Since purchasing Château La Marzelle, they have worked with the philosophy that "only a healthy grape is the basis of a great wine". The Sioen family has gone to great lengths to revive the vineyards of the estate and today the third generation, grandson Jean-Charles Joris, runs Château La Marzelle with the help of technical director Sébastien Desmoulin. They continue to raise La Marzelle to the highest level by constantly improving the small details that make this wine a jewel of Saint-Émilion. Château La Marzelle has been certified organic since the 2020 vintage, and cultivated biodynamically since 2015.

"The winter was mild with temperatures above normal, favouring very early bud-burst. This preciousness forced us to fight against spring frosts from the end of March. Thanks to our control system, we were able to preserve the potential of the harvest. Spring, marked by rain, resulted in very significant mildew pressure. The work and know-how in biological control of the entire team ensured the best performance. Summer, from July to September, was scorching. Our biodynamic vine cultivation allowed the vines to survive this particular period in a remarkable way. The ripening of the grapes took place slowly. Under the effect of stormy episodes in August and September, maturity accelerates. The harvest, earlier than usual, began on September 20th and ended on September 30th. The vinification, gentle and respectful, was in vats or barrels, making it possible to obtain powerful wines characterized by a concern for balance and elegance, expressing the aromatics of the fruit supported by the necessary tension. The wine has been aged in new French oak barrels but also, to preserve the fruit, in terracotta jars. The first tastings lived up to our expectations and invited us to discover this magnificent vintage." - Sébastien Desmoulin, Winemaker.
