This stunning Finca los Principes release was crafted by a super-talented winemaker from an outstanding single vineyard of old Tempranillo vines. It's a Rioja that pays homage to the traditional style of Rioja but one with a spring in its step. This smooth raspberry and cranberry-kissed wine is a beauty with lithe fruit notes and no ugly lingering tannins or woodwork. If you like unruffled, languid reds with silky notes and haunting mulberry and fresh herb flavours then this is your wine.

We liked their wines a great deal anyway, but asked that they make some single vineyard wines for us to really bring out the best characteristics of their vines. Purity is what this wine is all about. Only organic grapes are used, harvested at night to concentrate the aromas and flavours. Once in the bodega a natural fermentation ensues - started by the natural yeast flora in the winery. Cool fermentation then allows the maximum fruit flavours to be extracted, before allowing it to warm up to draw out vital tannins which give weight on the palate. No oak is used during this process. This means that nothing obscures the pure essence of these very special Rioja grapes.

Vic's main man in the winery, Borja, has afforded two of the best Garnacha and Tempranillo parcels, normally destined for a quality red Rioja, to make a superb Rosado that's exactly what we want these days - a nice pale colour, nice and dry but packed full of all your favourite red fruits. This glorious white Rioja is made from a blend of Viura and Chardonnay grapes which are planted on calcareous soil (the terroir famous for producing top quality, long-lived whites in Burgundy and Champagne). Meticulous attention to detail was taken in the vineyard and then in the winery, culminating in 5 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels. The result is a white with plenty of vivacity, and rounded, rich flavours of butter, toast, nut, pear & baked red apples.

You'll find grapefruit, soft pear, honeysuckle and almond notes in this beauty, with a lingering finish of stone fruit... heavenly.
