A unique parcel from the 2009 vintage, made and blended by Nico Vermuelen, consisting of the fruit of three blocks in Sir Lowry's Pass, Simonsdien and Franschoek. Nico gets us "back to basics" with a really nicely-made, fruit-driven, jammy Shiraz. The best we've seen in ages.

This is a thrilling, crisp, aromatic style that slakes thirst. To achieve this took some serious work. We searched high and low and ended up with Chardonnay from the rolling, super-cool Adelaide Hills, Riesling from the home of Riesling, the Eden Valley and the Semillon from the ever promising Limestone Coast.

After the difficult 2007 vintage it was a relief when 2008 turned out to be more of a classic affair with only some damage to fruit caused during the heat wave in March, but with careful vineyard management and vigorous selection at harvest it ensured that most wines were of excellent quality - typically rich and flavoursome with an excellent balance of fruit, tannins and acidity.

So, when you told us you wanted one of your favourite wines with a bit more fruit and aged in oak slightly longer, we poked our heads around the winery door and asked the winemakers to do just that. So they did. The typical cinnamon and forest fruit flavours of the Tempranillo grapes are combined with spicy toasty oak to make this soft but complex Gran Reserva. Commended by Decanter and is the ideal partner to roasted lamb.
