Argentina has built up a reputation in the UK for producing big, powerful, full-bodied reds, mainly from Malbec, but most definitely not a one trick pony. This Shiraz Cabernet Franc perfectly illustrates this - upfront you'll get a good thwack of spicy blackcurrant followed up by lovely sweet tannins on the finish. Best served chilled with some super-stinky cheese - an unlikely idea but one that works beautifully (just like this wine).

Brindle Ridge Limestone Coast Shiraz 2008

When you get over a particular marker of quality with Aussie reds, having a few years bottle age does wonders to your experience. You'll find that everything has been taken down a notch or two and all now sits together in perfect harmony. There is still plenty of traditional sweet Aussie fruit here but the age has imbued this wine with a silky softness. Stunning with a grilled rib-eye steak, or as Matthew Jukes suggests - some tasty lamb chops.

They succeeded grandly. August 9th is now a national holiday in celebration of those brave women. The Fifty Six is our own celebration of this historic moment; bringing together many parts to create an impressive whole. This wine reflects the colour and dynamism now found in the region, thanks to the women of '56.

This wine comes from the Carlos Serres stables, much loved by Virgin Wines customers already, and containing all of the lush and fleshy fruit lent to it by the vintage. Rioja like this fulfils a very different role to the grandiose and elegant old Gran Reservas...but that's not to say that it isn't equally grand. It is but a young version of the latter grand-daddy wine, though still dynamic enough to impress your socks off.

New Zealand Sauv Blanc has a very distinctive flavour profile and it can be difficult to see beyond the masses of gooseberry and rapier like acidity. When pulling together the components to blend Freehand we asked winemaker Ant Moore how we could reign in those common characters and arrive at something, that was still most definitely NZ Sauv, but had something of the Loire about it and the wines produced in Sancerre. The result was exactly what we were looking for - this wine has a lovely flavour profile.

New Zealand Sauv Blanc has a very distinctive flavour profile and it can be difficult to see beyond the masses of gooseberry and rapier like acidity. When pulling together the components to blend Freehand we asked winemaker Ant Moore how we could reign in those common characters and arrive at something, that was still most definitely NZ Sauv, but had something of the Loire about it and the wines produced in Sancerre. The result was exactly what we were looking for - this wine has a lovely flavour profile.

Aussies live for new styles and experimentation, but rarely put a foot wrong in the process. So here we can enjoy that exciting experimental spirit and an eminently drinkable wine in the same bottle! Both grapes produce sparkling, effervescing wine in the glass, as they were treated with kid gloves in the winery.
