One feature to look out for in top-drawer riesling is its charming aroma, according to one online source.
Writing on the Wall Street Journal Scene Asia blog, Amy Ma noted that the flavour of riesling wine can vary much more than its scent.
She advised first-time drinkers that they may be surprised by the taste, as it is often "flinty" and can range from bone dry to semi sweet.
"The one thing you can be sure of is the signature riesling perfume - all good rieslings carry a strong floral bouquet," wrote Ms Ma.
In her opinion, the wine goes brilliantly with salads and cerviches thanks to its bright acidity.
The blogger explained that this feature comes about as a result of the colder climates the grape is grown in.
Try the Vina Leyda Riesling Reserva 2008 for a clean and pure wine that critic Tim Atkin recently described as "thrilling".
