This wine says more about where it isn't from (the illustrious and trés-cher vineyards of Condrieu) than where it is (some very good little patches of Viognier in the Languedoc). It makes the former look a bit daft. This is great terroir-based quality, deliberately made to punch much higher than its weight.

Super-clean textbook Viognier aromas of ripe pears and peaches with a twist of Turkish delight merge into a palate of matching flavours. The fresh vibrant fruit is very neat and not over the top expressive as some Viogniers can become. Light, zippy and elegant.

When my mate Ben called me up with a parcel of his parents' best Viognier, offering a very good price, it was pretty much a done deal. When the sample bottle arrived it was clear that the style this English couple aspire to is a lip-smacking, accessible winner.
