This category is for those people who essentially want big, ripe, fruity wines, and although the tannins in them shouldn’t be overpowering, they don’t want any weakness!
Fruit, Fruit and More Fruit!
You will find plenty of black and red fruit flavours, so look for plums, redcurrants, blackcurrants, as well as other fruits such as blueberry and black cherries. A lot of these wines will have had contact with oak and so there will be some hints of vanilla too.
New and Old World…
You’ll see the a lot of the wines coming from the New World here so look for Australia, Chile, Argentina, South Africa. Other places include the South of France where the winemaking tends to be more innovative than the rest of the country, often giving the wines a ‘New World feel’. Also, you’ll see places such as Italy and Spain jump into this style. As for the grapes, look for the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz/Syrah, Garnacha, Carmenère and Barbera.
Dare To Go Huge?
These styles of wines are not far off from ‘Huge Reds’, so if you are feeling brave, take on the next level, but try not to get the two confused. Full and fruity reds are not monster wines, instead they are driven by the fruit.
