Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is the grey member of the pinot family, aptly named due to the dusty greyish skin of the grapes. While it’s widely grown in Italy, particularly in the North East regions of Lombardy, the Veneto and Friuli, the grape itself actually originates from France where it’s known as Pinot Gris. Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the exact same grape, produced in a distinctly different style. Pinot Grigio indicates the dry, everyday Italian style of wine, whereas Pinot Gris refers to the richer French (Alsace) style. While both are popular, Pinot Grigio tends to be the better known and more widely consumed of the two. One thing’s for certain, we here in the UK absolutely love the Italian stuff, and so do our friends over in the States!
