Wednesday 31st August saw the newly formed Virgin Wines Cricket Team, (yes, I know the season is nearly over!) take on the Lotus Racing Team in a T20 game.
The two captains wandered out to the middle for the toss. The coin was flipped, heads called by the Team Lotus skipper and it landed on a tail. Virgin Wines would have a bat.
The openers padded up and strode purposely out to the middle. It was a mixed start, losing a wicket second ball. Virgin Wines briefly recovered but some good bowling from Team Lotus saw them collect wickets at regular intervals. A superb seventh wicked stand of 58 and some excellent running saw us post a competitive 132 target for Lotus to chase.
A quick turn around and Virgin Wines took to the field. The first wicket fell in the first over and it was game on. Lotus’s number three arrived at the crease and rode his luck but scored quickly and sadly took the game away from us. We kept going, picking up wickets, but some watchful batting saw Lotus home!
The game was played in excellent spirits and the rematch has already been scheduled for next season. Some winter net sessions for Virgin Wines and I’m confident that next season will see us triumph.
