There have been a lot of fisticuffs over Pinot Grigio. Basically the Italians can't make as much as we all want to drink. But we have managed to come out on top. While everyone else was playing around with their calculators, we went and bought our wine before the vintage was finished. And it turns out we got a great price too.

This is our all time bestselling New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. You've probably never heard of Dr. John Forrest but he is New Zealand's winemaker of the year 2000. If you're a fan of Cloudy Bay a) this is the same grape variety, b) it is made next door, c) you can actually buy it! This has a price tag that would make most of its neighbours blush and is so good that we bought the lot! Drink chilled when you want to... chill.

When rubber-stamping the new vintage of one of your all-time favourite whites, Seraph Sauvignon, Francois Chainier, the winemaker, happened to mention an exciting stash of top-drawer boutique Sauvignon he'd been holding back for someone else. But, as I got there first we got the wine! Made using the best grapes from the Chainier family estate this is a straight up, classy swipe at fine Pouilly Fume. Fine and minerally with intense fruit.

Winemakers can be a rebellious lot. Premium winemakers who normally pay their bills producing recipe wines for the big brands secretly want to make the kind of wine they love. So, when we want a juicy, peachy Chardonnay from Padthaway, Penfold's region of choice for this grape, all we have to do is ask. Result, premium, tropical Single Vineyard Chardonnay, made from stock stolen from super-premium brands, for next to nothing. And now voted YOUR Wine of The Year, 2008

Aromatic, zesty and clean, this cheeky Italian Gavi is bound to become a new favourite. More exotically flavoured than Chardonnay, friendlier than Riesling and more refreshing than Sauvignon Blanc. If you're looking to refresh your cellar and your palate, there are few finer.

Domaine du Cedre was a slightly smaller but much more rosy and shiny apple than the good wine it replaces as our number one Chablis for everyday drinking. It has bright and classic flavours that pack loads of refreshment into the bottle and make devastatingly good bedfellows to any fish dish you have planned.

Obsessive about his trade, winemaker Peter Finlayson could be likened to a 'stalker' of good grapes. This is their flagship white and it's hard not to smother it in superlatives. Very wise use of oak, it adds great richness and depth to the mix without bullying the grape's natural fruit and delicate ripeness. A versatile food accompaniment, we did it South African style with barbequed fish and giant prawns.

For lovers of fine Loire Valley Sauvignons, this wine is a dream come true - even the Chateau where it's made looks like something straight out of a fairytale with it's magical setting, spires and tall towers that could hold a princess or two captive. The wine is certainly enchanting, with a taut minerally taste and dry finish that most Kiwi Sauvignons can only dream of. With a wine as good as this, the winemaker and his family will surely live happily ever after.

Fruity, zesty and light but bone-dry with bright acidity, Albarino is a well-kept secret of the fishing capital of Spain, Rias Baixas. Its refreshing citrus and tropical fruit aromas are balanced neatly by mineral overtones and a good structure. You can even age them for up to three years. The Spanish say "it goes with everything, or nothing", so experiment a little and try it with Tapas, or fish, or drink it all on its own. All hail Albarino.
