Jurgen is a young German chap who came to visit the Capcanes co-op some years ago..and never left. When I went there I nearly didn't too! It is so unusual to get such incredible quality from a co-op (Spanish or otherwise) that this place, and the wines, are utterly compelling. And the 2005 vintage is sweet as a nut!

You can always tell when a region is really promising by how much the land costs. Jumilla, in eastern Spain, has enjoyed rocketing prices recently. This is because it's now common knowledge that the region can produce stonking great wines. This is a sensational example.

Agustinos is the pet project of a stupendously wealthy Chilean gazillionaire, who set out to make super premium wines, using his capital, international winemaking expertise and the best equipment and grapes money can buy. By getting in on the ground floor, we have bought it at a price that is just, well, silly for the quality. Buy now before prices go up!

Danie Steytler was recognised by fellow winemakers as the top Pinotage producer of the Cape - so you've had the rest, now try the best! Severely limited stock, so buy this quickly. Very clean and smooth flavours - ideal with lamb chops or a roast.

From Ribero del Duero, the same valley as Spain's most expensive wine. The smoothness of this huge Tempranillo will make your taste buds think they've been put to bed with silk sheets. Oak aged in chalk tunnels hundreds of feet underground. Pure class in a glass.

What could be better than a belt-and-braces Shiraz from its spiritual home, the Barossa Valley? Answer: nothing, if you like rich, decadent sweetly-fruited wine for taking the edge off your day. A perfect wine to drink as you cook, the real magic ingredient in your cooking.

We were recently delighted by the powers of Aconcagua to make inky, dense and almost Mediterranean style wines. And just when we thought the concentration of fruit couldn't get any better, our friends whipped out the 'reserve' range. Wow.

This wine is blinding. Tiny yields, the sort of concentration that's mildly alarming which, given a bit of air and time in glass, rivals that of the greatest reds the Rhone has to offer. Truly. From some of the most unique vineyards I have ever seen, a solid slate hill that was dynamited by the previous owner. Vineyard meets moonscape.

Perez Cruz makes world-class wines and this limited edition Syrah is no exception. Full bodied is an understatement here. Intense cherry and chocolate aromas introduce a smoky, toasted mocha oak, enveloped in Kirsch-drenched cherries and piquant plums. An impressive wine for any occasion.
