We love this winery! It is a winery built with no walls in the extreme north of Chile where they have a similarly unconstrained attitude towards winemaking.
This is another winning masterpiece from the innovative but slightly mad winemakers at Famila Zuccardi. They take unusual grape varieties and test out the best ways to get the most they can from them. Viognier can be a difficult grape to grow well but it seems to suit Argentinean soil. Full of apricot and peach flavours but still refreshing and crisp, this is a lovely wine for sitting and sipping. It also matches slightly spicy dishes, such as Thai or Chinese food, or would go very well with fish.
Viognier is making waves down-under. So we sent our man Steve out to get the best he could. And he found this top-dollar fruit from a very specific spot in one of the region's best vineyards, Block 23. This was the perfect fruit for Steve to develop all that lovely peachy character that comes from the best Viogniers. Add a splash of Chardonnay for a bit of backbone and you've got a sensationally refreshing wine.
What a revelation, and a rare one at that, it is when you find a really top end white from the South of France. This one has all of the concentration, weight and perfumed fruit of a good white Chateuneuf-du-Pape, but at a fraction of the price.
This fruit-filled Viognier comes from the family owned Château la Domèque situated in the famous Corbières area of Southern France. The vineyards are planted on chalky-clay soil ideally suited to the cultivation of the highly aromatic Viognier. The small 52 hectare estate was acquired in the 1950's by the Roger family and the estates success is built on two generations of passion and hard work. A beautiful green tinted gold in colour with elegant and expressive white flower aromas on the nose.
