On a trip to Spain we discovered the amazing work of Victor Porter. With this wine you'll find the well executed combination of Spain's ancient winemaking history and Valencia's thriving modern winemaking technology. The result? Structure and complexity you'd expect to find in a Rioja Gran Reserva plus the soft fruitiness of a wine far younger in style. We very soon became addicted to this little number.

From Ribero del Duero, the same valley as Spain's most expensive wine. The smoothness of this huge Tempranillo will make your taste buds think they've been put to bed with silk sheets. Oak aged in chalk tunnels hundreds of feet underground. Pure class in a glass.

The gentle old lady of our Rioja range for those of you in need of delicate stimulation rather than a tango-moment rush. There are a few things you need to know about this wine before pressing the button. 1) it is from a fabulous year and consequently has gilt-edged fruit 2) it has been in oak for many years lending it subtle charms; and, 3) if you serve it with lamb shanks to your parents they'll look at you in a whole new light.

The key word here is 'Reserva' which means that it is made from superior grapes and only released when it is ready to drink. Made in a traditional style (very smooth, loads of caramel), this is a huge quality step up from bog standard Rioja.

Sounds odd, but we love to find bits and pieces. Special little parcels of wine locked away, sometimes forgotten, in barrels the world over. This is just such a find. A cut above the average, but no more expensive. Get it while you can.

We like to provide a personal service. So, when you told us you wanted one of your favourite wines with a bit more fruit and aged in oak slightly longer, we poked our heads around the winery door and asked the winemakers to do just that. So they did. The typical cinnamon and forest fruit flavours of the Tempranillo grapes are combined with spicy toasty oak to make this soft but complex Gran Reserva. Commended by Decanter and is the ideal partner to roasted lamb.

As well as cracking out some top-drawer reds, this producer takes advantage of Tempranillo's great ability to produce deliciously lip-smacking Rosé. It is a perfect, red-fruited dry Rosé that would be best served up with lunch, but would come into its own for bringing in the first BBQs of the year.

A lip-smackingly good Rioja like that won a Silver Medal at Vinalies - a prestigious international wine competition held in France. Made from old vines and aged for a year in oak, this is one of those wines that you'll want to save for contemplative moments alone with the cheese-board, or reserve for very special guests. Spicy and smooth, if you must share it over dinner, then cook a roast or bung a casserole in the oven.

The stony soil and warm balmy climate of Veenwoudens Thornhill Vineyards are similar to those in Châteauneuf du Pape in the Southern Rhone. A beautiful blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has as many hard edges as a ball of cotton wool. Fruity cassis, raspberry, nutmeg and cloves fill your mouth leaving a long clean finish. Great with paella, herb crusted pork, or vegetarian moussaka.
